About This Spot

Nestled along the cobblestone charm of Via del Governo Vecchio, Da Tonino - Trattoria Bassetti unfolds like a well-kept secret amid Rome’s historic heartbeat. From the moment you step inside, the space feels intimate and quietly alive—a cozy retreat that wraps you in the warm familiarity of a Roman home rather than the polished sheen of a tourist spot. The modest, snug dining room exudes an unhurried, genuine vibe where the rhythm is set by the soft murmur of conversation and the gentle clinks of glassware.

This is a place where tradition lingers like the scent of herbs simmered slowly in a bubbling sauce. The atmosphere invites you to linger, savoring each bite as if time itself slows down. Whether you settle in at a small table inside or find a spot outside along the street, the surroundings pulse with a sense of local life—a welcomed pause in the day where friends and strangers alike connect over simple pleasures.

At Da Tonino, the menu reads like a heartfelt letter to Roman culinary roots. Dishes brim with unmistakable comfort—the kind that comes from recipes honed over decades, passed down and nourished by genuine passion and understanding of place. The pasta sings with uncomplicated purity, every forkful carrying the weight of tradition, such as cacio e pepe that whispers of the region’s rustic soul or the rich depths found in carefully stewed veal and tender rabbit. The house wine pours generously, offering a familiar embrace alongside hearty, thoughtfully prepared plates that feel less like a meal and more like a shared experience.

Despite its friendly bustle and full tables, the care from the staff never wavers. There’s an unspoken dedication to making guests feel like part of the extended family, attentive without intrusion, quietly ensuring every visit feels carefully considered. It’s this subtle attentiveness woven into the fabric of the trattoria that lingers after the last bite—the feeling of having found a place that resonates beyond rush and routine.

For those who cherish the quiet artistry of Roman cooking, steeped in authenticity and local warmth, Da Tonino offers more than nourishment: it’s an invitation to experience the city’s heart through the knowing palate of those who call it home.

This place definitely lives up to the reviews. The food tasted like Italian home cooking. I ordered the rabbit and it was the best I’ve ever had. It’s a bit tight inside but the staff is kind and welcoming. Highly recommend.

We went for lunch, it was already 2 PM, and we got a table without waiting. We ordered pasta with cacio e pepe and meatballs. What a wonderful meal! The pasta was delicious with a very good sauce. And the meatballs were spectacular! One of the best meals we had in Rome. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu, which was also delicious! And a cherry tart that was okay. I definitely recommend this restaurant and would go back.

Cozy place with food that tasted homemade! Ordered the eggplant pasta and beef meatballs, and they were both full of flavour, really filling, and value for money. Went at 1pm and didn’t have to wait for a table. Staff were attentive and made sure we had a great experience. Will certainly come back when I next visit Rome!

Best dinner experience of our trip to Rome. Recommended by a friend who’d been sent there by a tour guide. No one sitting outside on arrival at 7.15 albeit inside was full (small). Got an outside table and queue formed with 15 mins down the road as the other tables filled. Clearly a known entity for locals. Incredible flavours, delicious dishes, attentive service despite how busy and phenomenal value. Bottle of wine, 2 starters, four mains and 2 puddings came to €116. Go and enjoy and feel smug in your discovering a (not very hidden to the locals) gem!

Da Tonino became my favorite restaurant not just in Rome, but in all of Italy. Originally planning to eat mostly street food during our trip, we discovered this gem and it completely changed our dining plans. After our first visit, we immediately returned the following night. The cuisine is exceptional across the board. Their cacio e pepe stands out as the best pasta dish I’ve ever experienced — the balance of pecorino cheese and fresh black pepper creates an unforgettable flavor. The meatballs deserve equal praise, with a texture so tender they practically melt in your mouth, resembling perfectly prepared meatloaf but somehow even better. The antipasti and desserts maintain the same high quality, making it tempting to order the entire menu. The attentive service truly sets Da Tonino apart. The intimate size of the restaurant ensures personalized attention throughout your meal. Our waiter both nights was exceptionally friendly and helpful, contributing significantly to the overall experience. The pricing is very reasonable, especially by Rome standards. We typically shared an antipasti, first course, second course, and dessert between two people, which provided the perfect amount of food. Their house red wine pairs beautifully with the meal. Important note: Da Tonino doesn’t accept reservations and fills up by 8 PM. Arrive by 7:30 PM to secure a table. Prepare yourself for one of the most memorable meals of your life.

Small restaurant open until late in the day. Reasonable prices for the quality of the food. Service was alright and we liked the “local” atmosphere. Portions are large!! We went there twice in our vacation. First we had carbonara and amatriciana and the second time we had again carbonara and pesto pasta. Highly recommend (especially their carbonara).

Da Tonino provided a truly great first meal in Rome! This trattoria is a must-try for authentic, delicious Italian cuisine. We absolutely loved the classic oxtail, tripes, and their rich carbonara. The appetizers, especially the burrata with anchovies and artichokes, were divine. The service was fantastic; a special shoutout to the Filipino staff ("kuyas") for their welcoming and attentive service. Highly recommended!

One of the most memorable meals I have ever eaten and the best meal I ate in Rome; homestyle and cooked to absolute perfection. The flavours were stunning and I struggle to find fault with the cooking. Oxtail (coda alla vaccinara) was absolutely sublime. Service was excellent. Be prepared to wait for a table but boy is it worth it!
